Girls Water Polo Dives into a New Season

At the end of the 2021-2022 season, the Fenwick Girls Water Polo suffered a tough loss to Stevenson High School in the first game of the IHSA State Series. The team had beat out well known adversaries like York and OPRF to be there, needless to say the disappointment was real. But this year, they are back for more. Missing goalie Nahla Baisel and Junior Xiomara Trejo, the team is itching to have everyone back in the water. Senior Annie McCarthy says, “We work really well together and once we are at full strength we will be ready to take on anyone.” But the team is already off to a strong start this season. Beating conference teams Ignatius and Loyola, the ladies are ready to take home the MCAC Trophy in a few weeks. On the statewide front, the girls are currently ranked 7th, but, watch for them in the top 5 after they lost to New Trier by only 1 point; they are ready to come back for more when they see NT again.

More than anything, the team is “a family” according to senior Hannah Schubkegel. “The girls are working hard at practice and putting in the work that needs to be done to get where we want to… which is beating York and OPRF and heading to state.”

It’s been an optimistic start to the season for FGWP and we can’t wait to see where they go.
