A few weeks ago Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, declared spring was
coming, and winter was coming to an end. This can only mean one thing… spring sports are back in session and starting up in the next few weeks! From the end of February to the beginning of May, Boys and Girls Water Polo will be sharing a pool as they complete their goals for the season. So, what are their goals?
Fenwick’s Boys Water Polo team is welcoming a new coach. The Aquatics
Director, Mr. Garcia, will be starting his first season with the boys this spring. He described the team’s goals for the season in a motivational way explaining it is, “Unanimously, to win State.” Winning State is what every team is competing for at the end of the day. To get there, Coach Garcia wants the team to “get better at every single practice, every single day, and every single game.” These are the steps he believes will help the team accomplish their goals.
The Girls Water Polo team, led by Coach Liz Timmons, is looking forward to the start of
their season. Two years ago the team made it far in state playoffs, placing eighth. This year the girls are aiming to do their best at achieving that same goal. The goal for the girls on all levels is to be successful at Conference, Sectionals, and State. However, sometimes more importantly the goal is to, “Grow as a team, and in community.” This reflects the atmosphere of the intense sport. Both Coaches emphasized the importance of teamwork in a sport like water polo that is so physical. Coach Liz encourages girls to join water polo because of the community atmosphere, emphasizing that the group becomes so important in their high school experience.
Both teams are excited to get started in the upcoming weeks. Friar Nation is
excited to see how these two teams, rich in successful legacy at Fenwick, will do as they get farther into the 2024 season. Good luck to both teams as they accomplish their goals.
