With Coach Kathleen O’Laughlin retiring last season, the 2023 volleyball team started the season off with a brand new coaching staff, Coach Tee Pimsarn and Assistant Coach Alexis Martinez. This year also came with almost a brand new team, with five varsity returners. Senior captain, Hazel Davis, said the new staff was the hardest adjustment. She commented that she was used to Coach O’Laughlin’s way of running things, “but in the end, it worked out,” she said. Davis followed to say that as for the new team, everyone gelled quickly and significantly well.
The girls hit some roadblocks throughout the season’s course. Even through adversity, the girls continued to practice and work hard in the gym to end the season strong. Davis says, “As captains, Lizzie and I kept the team motivated by trying our best to keep everyone’s spirits high.”
The last few weeks of the season the girls showcased some of the best volleyball they had played all year. Junior, Ava D’Alessandro, commented on one of the later games against York: “Playing York for teacher appreciation night was the loudest and most fun game we ever played. The energy on the court and the bench filled the gym with joy. I haven’t seen our team look that good and I’m glad we got to show off all of our hard work.”
Senior captain, Lizzie Scharpf, mentioned that she enjoyed watching everyone improve their abilities on the court. The team unfortunately lost in the regional match against St. Ignatius but ended with hope and a good feeling about next year.
