Varsity Girls Lacrosse Plays to Defend the Shield

Lacrosse season is here! Let’s take a look at what our varsity girls lacrosse team has accomplished so far.

The girls varsity lacrosse team is made up of a total of 23 players—eight seniors, eight juniors, and seven sophomores. Of this total, 13 are returning varsity players. Every player on the team this year played at some level last year, a first in her four years of coaching at Fenwick, says Coach Tracy Bonaccorsi. With three wins under its belt, the team is ready to work together to take on whatever comes its way.

The team’s first win of the season was against Riverside-Brookfield with a final score of 14-2. They also won against Nazareth Academy (9-6) and Northside College Prep (15-5). The girls have only lost one game so far, which was to Loyola. However, this loss is not enough to get them down. The team looks forward to playing Trinity for senior night and being able to celebrate its eight seniors and their growth and leadership with the program. In addition, it looks forward to its game against Montini which will be played for a special organization called Morgan’s Message. Morgan’s Message “strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community,” explains Coach Bonaccorsi. Not only do our varsity girls lacrosse players play to defend the shield; they also play for a cause.

This team could not be where it is today without the leadership behind it. While she has only been at Fenwick for four years, Coach Bonaccorsi has coached lacrosse since her senior year of college. She began coaching for a high school in California near her university, she explained. In addition, she coaches club lacrosse for East Ave Lacrosse and has been since 2017. “My favorite part of coaching is being able to spend almost every single day of the spring with the best group of girls and coaches,” exclaims Coach Bonaccorsi.“Our program is centered around creating and maintaining a positive, competitive, and safe space for our student-athletes and I’m very lucky to have such a great group of girls to do this with day in and day out!”

We wish the girls lots of luck as their season progresses and they continue to defend the shield.
