“Many years ago in late May, another class of Fenwick seniors all walked across the stage, received their diploma, and graduated. Then came the moment that everybody waits for. All the seniors threw their graduation caps high in the air. Except against all odds a stray cap flew out of the midst of caps, headed towards the bishop and hit him in the eye. And ever since that graduation Fenwick has never had graduation caps at graduation again. Or so the story goes…
Although the real reason is unclear, it is true that Fenwick seniors are not given caps at graduation. There have not been caps since many of the teachers at Fenwick can remember. This has become a tradition at Fenwick. It is a fact that every senior knows. They will not have a cap at their graduation.
Many seniors do not like this fact. One senior, Rowan Auriemma says, “having caps at graduation feels like something every high school senior gets to do, except for the Fenwick seniors.” Others share the same sentiment as Rowan, believing that not having caps is a big part of high school that they are missing out on. Every high school graduation depicted in the media shows the graduation caps. Everyone knows that the tassel is moved over after walking across the stage. And the image of caps being thrown celebratorily in the air is ingrained in every student’s mind. Not taking part in these traditions feels like there is a big part of high school they are missing. Maybe there is another solution that keeps everyone safe. Senior Isabel Price states, “We’ve all heard the bishop story, in my opinion they should just wear goggles”.
