From teaching her students math in Fenwick classrooms, to coaching her cheerleaders new stunts and routines at the priory, Ms. Yusa does it all. Her new presence is just what Fenwick needs. Entering her first year of teaching, Ms. Yusa has a lot to contribute.
Graduating from Marist High School and Loras College, Ms. Yusa left a legacy. Ms. Yusa was on Marist’s varsity cheerleading team for all four years. She wrote for the high school’s newspaper, where she was a sports editor. In college, she participated on the cheerleading and softball team, and was the school’s Math club president.
As the new head JV cheerleading coach, Coach Yusa, “looks forward to growing the program as a whole.” With competition season starting, she is excited to get things going. With new athletes who have never competed before, it is her goal to give them new experiences and a good sense at what hard work can lead to. Junior Ruby DeBose, a member of the JV cheerleading team, looks forward to this new season with Coach Yusa. DeBose says, “Coach Yusa brings a positive energy to the team, and always finds the importance in building relationships on the mat. She offers support and help to both her students and athletes.” Many of the athletes on the team happen to be some of Ms. Yusa’s students. Coach Yusa describes coaching as fun, highlighting that it allows her to connect to her students outside of school and class. Building relationships with people on a team is extremely important, especially in a sport like cheer. A foundation of trust is key when learning new things.
Here at Fenwick, Ms. Yusa teaches Algebra I and college prep Geometry to freshmen and sophomores. Being a new teacher to students who are just starting to figure out Fenwick themselves can be hard. Despite this, Ms. Yusa enjoys teaching, and describes the year as something new and positive. Moving forward, she hopes to immerse herself within the Fenwick community. With many more years to come, her main goal is to contribute to a good environment for her students, and be a part of Fenwick and all the values that come with it.
