Is Disney+ Still Worth the Subscription?
Ever since November 12, 2019, Disney+ has taken the world by storm. In what seemed to be like the perfect time to release the platform, Disney+ holds the greatest of content from Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel from the past 80 years all on one streaming service. As we near its two year anniversary, we’ll see if this streaming service is indeed worth the subscription now in 2021.
During the past few years, we’ve seen a large increase in streaming services from all entertainment companies alike. What seemed like a big-time deal with the introduction of Netflix is now almost like a new norm that all television and film companies must create to stay competitive. As you would expect, Disney obviously had to take a shot at it. In 2021, we seem to have unlimited streaming service options with the likes of Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix. Even during the past year, we’ve seen more streaming services released with HBO Max, Peacock, Quibi, Apple TV and Paramount Plus. Are any of these still worth it?
Disney+ has only been out for two years, and still it seems like the Disney vault is ever expanding. Aside from the classic Disney tales and blockbuster movies from the past few years, the originals seem to be the biggest reasons for Disney+’s popularity. Ever since its release, The Mandalorian has been one of Disney+’s heavy hitters. The Star Wars spinoff show is about a bounty hunter in the outer rim and his journey through the Star Wars galaxy. And without a doubt, any Star Wars story in this day and age will get lots of popularity. Also noteworthy is the fact that it was Star Wars’ first live action television show–it was certainly something original. With the second season finishing last year, Star Wars fans cannot get enough of The Mandalorian. With the third season in the works, along with various other confirmed spinoffs to the show, Star Wars content seems to be endless with Disney+.
Even outside of the Star Wars content, Marvel has begun to release its line of originals beginning with WandaVision, Falcon, and The Winter Soldier. According to the Disney investors way back in 2020, well over ten different Marvel shows and eight Star Wars shows, not including The Mandalorian, are in the works and set to release within the next three years. In addition to the regularly-available Disney and Pixar content, the new feature called “Premier Access” allows users to pay money and view all of Disney’s newest films before they even hit theaters. Movies including Mulan and Raya and the Last Dragon both had these features implemented, and it only seems like more Disney movies will have the same treatment.
It is indeed a fact that most viewers have Disney+ due to their original television and movie content from the biggest franchises this decade. Especially due to the pandemic, most of the Disney+ originals were delayed. Due to this, new content seems to be arriving every week from delayed and new originals alike.
Now to answer the final question: is Disney+ worth it? The answer mostly depends on your personal preferences. Unlike most streaming services, Disney+ doesn’t have much variety. You know exactly what you’re getting when you subscribe to Disney+: Disney movies, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar movies. Consistent with Disney’s child-like nature, you won’t be seeing any R-rated content on the platform, either. However, if you know that you’re a fan of Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, or Pixar, then Disney+ is exactly the place for you.
