Movie Review: Sonic the Hedgehog

Race to the theatres to see Sonic the Hedgehog! Or maybe don’t… Many Fenwick students seem to have low expectations for the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and despite other films based on video games (such as the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie, which was nothing less than awful), this article serves to tell you not to be so quick to judge.

While I thought the movie was a little fast-paced, full of plot holes, and not necessarily good, it was nonetheless entertaining. Of course, it’s difficult to place a character and his enemy from a fantasy land video game into a real world setting. This considered, there are bound to be some inherent flaws in the movie; however, I feel that the Sonic creators did the best job possible to create a legitimate movie in spite of this. The CGI was extremely appealing, and it was obvious that a lot of work had been put into the design of Sonic, especially after there was immense backlash towards his original design featured in previews. This movie is certain to be enjoyed by people familiar with the Sonic franchise, as it contains plenty of references to various games and characters, as well as allusions to Sonic’s role in long-dead memes.

If I were to give you one reason to see this movie, it would be to appreciate all of the work that the animators put into completely remaking the movie. After Sonic’s original design was scrapped due to the previously mentioned backlash, the entire movie was reanimated to suit the taste of the audience over the course of an additional five months of production. This made the movie seem more “authentic” and true to the Sonic that fans are familiar with from the video games that inspired this movie. This shows a great consideration of the viewers that I think deserves recognition.

As of Thursday, February 20, the film holds a 67 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, which I think is a pretty decent score all things considered. Before you see it, however, take it with a grain of salt that you’re a fourteen-eighteen-year-old going to see a movie about a talking blue hedgehog with superpowers, so it’s not like you’re in for a masterpiece of a plot. But if this is for you, the movie’s ending and credit scenes are promising of an upcoming sequel!
