Disney Reboots Childhood Classics

Disney is working incredibly hard this year, as they are releasing many movies that will leave viewers with déjà vu. Lovers of classic childhood movies, such as “Aladdin”, “Dumbo”, and “The Lion King”, are in luck, as all three movies will be rebooted by Disney this year!

In addition to these major films, “Toy Story 4” and “Frozen 2” will add to their well-known franchises. Students that grew up in the 2000’s will also be excited to learn that Disney just released a film version of “Kim Possible”. These movies are causing Disney lovers to anticipate seeing modern versions of their favorite films.A new spin will be put on “Aladdin,” supposedly creating a non-traditional take on the movie. One of the major new aspects of the film is that it will not be told in chronological order, which will hopefully not be confusing for viewers.

The original songs will be featured, but songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known for their work in “La La Land,” “Greatest Showman” and Tony-award winning musical “Dear Evan Hansen” are said to have written two new songs for the film. One will be a solo for Jasmine, and the other is a new duet for the famous couple Aladdin and Jasmine. Will Smith will be taking over Robin William’s character, the Genie, bringing new personality to the beloved character.

All viewers will enjoy this new and refreshing approach to the film. Along with “Aladdin,” the hope-inspiring film “Dumbo” will also contain a different perspective. The movie will be only loosely based on the original 1941 success. Danny Devito acts as Max Medici, the owner of a struggling circus, and acquires a former circus star and his two children to care for Dumbo.

The imaginative approach has the potential to make this movie another box office success. “The Lion King” will keep the same basic plot, but update the animation of the 90’s. After a tragic incident, Simba, the heir to the throne, must defeat the infamous Scar to claim what is rightly his.
Simba gains a couple of friends, Timone and Pumba, along his journey, who help him in his battle. New photorealistic computer animation will be used to make the animals more lifelike.

The film contains an extremely star-studded cast, with the most notable being Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa, and Seth Rogen as Pumba. The talented cast and new software are sure to prove that “The Lion King” is a timeless childhood masterpiece.

In addition to multiple rebooted films, Disney will be releasing “Toy Story 4” and “Frozen 2”. Disney also released a movie based on the television show “Kim Possible” just last month. Many young Milennials and older children of Gen Z looked forward to this reboot of the popular program, which focuses on the life of a teenage girl whose side job is as a spy.

Unfortunately, this film did not live up to its expectations, as only 1.24 million people viewed it. The overall rating was an abysmal 0.22, making “Kim Possible” the lowest-rated Disney Channel Original Movie in the past ten years.  Despite the lack of approval for this movie, the excitement for the other releases remains strong, and Disney lovers remain optimistic.

Disney fans are going to have a busy year trying to buy tickets to each new release. Each film leaves about a month until the next one is debuted, giving fans a repeated frenzy of excitement throughout the year. The large number of reboots is sure to continue Disney’s dominance in the box office while pleasing fans reminiscent of their childhood.
