After one of the best seasons in Fenwick history last year, the football team has had a lot to live up to this season. In addition, the team lost a plethora of talented seniors, including Jacob Keller, one of the most athletic quarterbacks in the state of Illinois.
“This season is all about learning,” senior wide receiver Danny Feldmeier commented. “We played a difficult schedule in the regular season and competed the best we could, and I think the younger guys on the team learned a lot in the process.”
One of those younger guys is sophomore quarterback Danny Cronin, who has done his best to fill the big shoes of Keller. He has already improved immensely over the nine-game regular season after a shaky start to the year, and his upside looks phenomenal.
“Playing at the varsity level is a whole new game, and it takes a while to get acclimated to the new style of play,” senior lineman Austin Glazier said.
In the last regular season game of the year against De La Salle, the friars clinched a share of the conference championship and improved their regular season record to 6-3, a feat that earned them the twentieth seed in the class 7A state championship bracket.
Winning conference and making the playoffs is no small feat, especially for a team led by a sophomore quarterback. More important than these accomplishments, however, is the experience and knowledge that the younger members of the varsity team earned, something that will hopefully translate to an even more successful season next year.
