At the last football game of the season, the Girl’s Cheer Team stood in forty-two-degree rainy weather to support the boy’s football team. Despite there being no students in the student section, the girls still cheered loud and had fun doing it.
Cheering at the Friday night football and basketball games is what the team looks forward to the most. The whole team stays after school and in order to get ready to root on the Friars. The girls help each other with make-up, curling their hair, and making sure everyone looks like a team by game time.
But it’s not just the looks that matter. Hours of hard work and dedication are required to be a Fenwick cheerleader. Not your average person can flip across the room and be thrown 20 feet into the air without an immense amount of time spent perfecting tumbling maneuvers. One of the cheer captains, Isabel Grimes, said that “the team has worked incredibly hard with their tumbling this year,” and that she’s “so proud of everyone’s commitment to improving.”
Not only is the tumbling hard work, but the half time routines themselves have to be choreographed and the music has to be perfectly picked out to fit the routine. The team enjoys performing these routines the most and sharing school spirit with the student body.
When the girls aren’t busy creating new routines or flipping around the gym at practice, they host a clinic for children who are interested in becoming future Friar cheerleaders. They teach the children new cheers, and have them ready to perform the next day at either a football or basketball game, depending on the season.
Later this year, the team is hoping to host an event with Fenwick’s Best Buddies program that would be similar to the clinics they have run for future cheerleaders. The Friar girls would teach a routine to Best Buddies, and have them perform at a Basketball game in the future.
Be sure to come out and watch the Fenwick Cheer Team at one of the upcoming basketball games this year, and witness their fun routines and the hard work put into them.
