As November swiftly approaches, Fenwick’s BFG once again prepares to unveil a stellar fall play. The play will make its debut on Friday, November 2nd.

After last year’s outstanding rendition of Is He Dead?, by Mark Twain, the cast now readies their 2018 show: Quality Street, by J. M. Barrie.

Renowned for his creation of Peter Pan, Barrie premiered Quality Street in 1901, and it grew toward a marvelous level of success before World War II. The play follows the plights of sisters Phoebe (played by Maria Frech) and Susan (played by Susie Nash), as Phoebe desperately clings to her youth in fear of declining into an old maid.

The play spans ten years and includes deception, caning, and a clueless lover by the name of Valentine Brown (portrayed by Spencer Gallagher).

Overall, the play focuses on themes of love and identity, and is bound to provide each audience member with a tense and heart-wrenching experience.

This year, Junior Maria Frech will be performing as Phoebe Throssel, one of the leading roles. Maria expressed a great deal of excitement about getting to be Phoebe and described her as “such an in-depth character. There is so much to her.”

She summarized her character’s plot briefly, “This woman is trying to find herself, and she thinks she needs a man to do that.” The play teaches some valuable lessons: “Girls don’t need a guy. Boys shouldn’t base everything on appearances. Girls can relate to it, and boys can learn a lesson.” Of course, every production has challenges along with the fun, and Maria explained that “[Phoebe] has a lot to say, and that’s a lot to memorize.”

Whether you’re looking to indulge in some laughter, contemplate the deep mysteries of love, or simply support the Blackfriars Guild and your fellow classmates, Quality Street is going to be a show you won’t want to miss. Show dates will be Friday, November 2 at 7pm, Saturday, November 3 at 7pm, and Sunday, November 4 at 3pm.
